Culture

Steelpan

Steelpan (also known as pan, steelpan, or steeldrums, and sometimes collectively with the musicians as a steelband) is a musical instrument and a form of music originating in Trinidad and Tobago. It is claimed widely that it is the only acoustic musical instrument invented during the 20th century.

Calypso

Calypso is a style of Afro-Caribbean music which originated in Trinidad at about the start of the 20th century. The roots of the genre lay in the arrival of African slaves, who, not being allowed to speak with each other, communicated through song. This art form has evolved to several fusion genres including soca, chutney and rapso.

Nobel Prize winning authors

Sir Vidiadhar Surajprasad Naipaul, T.C. (born August 17, 1932, in Chaguanas, Trinidad and Tobago), better known as V. S. Naipaul, is a Trinidadian-born British novelist of Indo-Trinidadian ethnicity and Bhumihar Brahmin heritage from Gorakhpur in Eastern Uttar Pradesh, India. Naipaul lives in Wiltshire, England. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2001 and knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1990.

Derek Alton Walcott (born January 23, 1930) is a West-Indian poet, playwright, writer and visual artist who writes in English. Born in Castries, St. Lucia, he won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1992. In 1959 he founded the Trinidad Theatre Workshop in Trinidad.

Emmy awardees

Mas' designer Peter Minshall is renowned not only for his Carnival costumes, but also for his role in opening ceremonies of the Barcelona Olympics, the 1994 Football World Cup, the 1996 Summer Olympics and the 2002 Winter Olympics, for which he won an Emmy Award.

* Brian Charles Lara (born May 2, 1969) (nicknamed "The Prince of Port-of-Spain" or simply "The Prince") is a record-breaking West Indian cricketer who is regarded as one of the greatest batsmen ever. Lara is the current captain of the West Indies team, has several times topped the Test batting rankings and as of December 2006 holds two of the most prestigious World Records for batting in Tests: highest individual innings and the all-time leading run scorer. He also holds the record for the highest individual score in first class cricket..


Football
*  The national football team qualified for the 2006 FIFA World Cup by beating Bahrain in Manama on 16 November 2005, making them the smallest country ever (in terms of population) to qualify. This was their first successful qualification and brought their

Olympic Games:
*  Hasely Crawford won the first and only Olympic gold medal for Trinidad and Tobago in the men's 100 m dash in the 1976 Summer Olympics. Nine different athletes from Trinidad and Tobago have won twelve medals at the Olympics, beginning with a silver medal in weightlifting, won by Rodney Wilkes in 1948 [3], and most recently a bronze medal with by George Bovell III [4] in 2004. Ato  Boldon has won the most medals for Trinidad and Tobago with 4.

Medical Achievements

The Caribbean 's first test-tube baby (from In Vitro Fertilisation) was conceived at Medical Associates Hospital, Trinidad in 1996, resulting in the delivery of a healthy baby boy.  Initially, this progamme was a joint enterprise with Sheffield University personnel and although the link persists, it is now an independent programme staffed by local personnel. Success rates are comparable to international standards such that since that time many other babies have been born through an ongoing program of In Vitro Fertilization which has expanded to include sub-speciality services.
